Becky French, Founder, Marwood, Brand of Tomorrow 2015
Marwood was founded in 2010 by Becky French and quickly grew to become a successful men’s accessories brand.
Starting with the humble neck tie, Becky altered its sole association with city suits and turned it in to a niche fashion accessory, utilising the very best of British manufacturing.
Marwood’s stockist list has, over the years, included Dover Street Market, Mr Porter, Selfridges, Beams, Isetan, Maxfield LA, Barneys NYC among many others. Marwood’s lace and woven neckwear and hand-dyed mohair socks adorned the shelves of these stores. Marwood is currently focusing its efforts on a growing eCommerce business and creative consultancy strand.
In order to be a successful luxury entrepreneur what are three pieces of advice you would give?
Confidence in product.
Listen and learn from experienced others.
What are the most important lessons you have learned along your journey?
Hire good people and work as a team.
Multi-tasking makes you feel good but not always the most effective. Stay focussed.
Take time out, to breath and reassess.
What are the watch outs along the way?
Watch the cash flow! Always watch it.
Watch out for over committing yourself and your brand to too many outlets.
Watch that you don’t lose sight of what you are good at and what made you start your brand in the first place. Keep the passion.
When you were started out who was your biggest inspiration? And what did they tell you that helped make you a success?
‘Other Shop’ were Marwood’s first stockist. At the time they were based on Savile Row and known as a niche store with a great reputation for finding and nurturing new designers. They believed in Marwood from the very beginning, after seeing my blog, even before any products were launched. Their understanding of my creative vision was hugely encouraging and they helped me to get a spot in their Paris showroom and showcase Marwood to the best stores around the world, all of which came to their showroom because of their reputation in the industry. It was inspiring to see ‘Other Shop’ leading the way with their independent take on fashion, not just following an expected path.
