Polly McMaster is the Founder of The Fold, a contemporary fashion brand targeting the modern, professional woman. After completing her PhD in Virology at Cambridge, she started her career in consulting and private equity.
She founded The Fold in 2012 to create inspiring and empowering collections for working women sold online and through the brand’s Clerkenwell-based showroom. The Fold has fast developed a loyal following and appeared in over 100 press features. High profile clients of the brand include the Duchess of Cambridge, Samantha Cameron, Holly Willoughby and Kim Murray. Polly has been featured in Management Today’s 35 under 35 women in business, and was a StartUp “Young Gun” in 2015. The Fold was selected to be part of the Walpole’s prestigious Brands of Tomorrow programme in 2016.
In order to be a successful luxury entrepreneur what are three pieces of advice you would give?
Your product is everything that defines you and lives on with your customer as part of their lives.
Luxury can manifest itself in different ways to your customer, so listen to them to learn what they appreciate the most.
Build your brand, your team and your product to reflect the values that you believe in.
What are the most important lessons you have learned along your journey?
The team around you will determine your ultimate success or failure, and building a strong, supportive culture throughout the business will drive success as well as loving what you do.
One of our customers recently said “you won’t remember what someone said, but you will remember how they made you feel” – this is so true for every touch point of your brand, so never forget to treat every product, customer and employee with due love and care.
When you were started out who was your biggest inspiration? And what did they tell you that helped make you a success?
Since the beginning our customers are our inspiration for everything at The Fold. They are a diverse group of incredible women – from the multi-tasking working mother to the highest ranks of government office, and its a privilege to see them wearing The Fold.
