Founder, Shaun Leane, Brand of Tomorrow 2008
Shaun Leane began his career training at the bench in London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden. While working as a goldsmith, Leane began a long-standing collaboration with the late Alexander McQueen, creating provocative catwalk jewels that have become iconic milestones in the art of couture jewellery. This high-profile collaboration acted as a catalyst to Leane’s burgeoning desire to blend technical perfection with creative freedom, and in 1999 he launched the first collections of Shaun Leane Jewellery. His creations have been described by Sotheby’s as “antiques of the future’’ and have received recognition across the globe. Shaun Leane has won UK Jewellery Designer of the Year on four occasions and has been awarded the Walpole Award for Best British Luxury Craftsmanship.
In order to be a successful luxury entrepreneur what are three pieces of advice you would give?
Recognise your vision, find your identity and maintain your integrity.
What are the most important lessons you have learned along your journey?
Even if you are creatively minded don’t undervalue the importance of developing your business skills.
What are the watch outs along the way?
Not to let creativity exceed your means.
When you were started out who was your biggest inspiration? And what did they tell you that helped make you a success?
The jeweller Joel A. Rosenthal (JAR) has been a key inspiration on my work. He is fearless in his use of material and colour and has proved that there remains huge demand for meticulously crafted jewellery in the tradition of past masters.
